The purpose of this project is to examine the effectiveness of a community-based, family-focused competence enhancement program--Early Risers Skills for Success. Designed as an early intervention program for rural, high-risk elementary school-aged children and focused on academic enrichment, family strengthening, and prosaic skills development, it has been selected as a model program by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. Initial efficacy studies have documented significant program effects. This evaluation will test the long-term effectiveness of this intervention with these high-risk youth. The project will be considered successful if it demonstrates long-term positive effects and that it is cost-effective for communities to implement.
