Despite the current ratio of women students in medical and dental schools, there is a paucity of women in senior academic administrative roles, and women continue to lag significantly in advancement to top positions. The Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women, brings together qualified senior women faculty for skills training, mentoring, networking, and professional development. While fellows from the first three classes (1995-1998) have exhibited significant career advancement post-ELAM, more in-depth evaluation of the Program and its fellows is required to understand better the program's influence and impact. The purpose of this project is to continue the evaluation of the ELAM Program by expanding the assessment methods and design. It seeks to answer two major questions: (1) does the ELAM Program work to increase women into academic leadership roles; and (2) how do women develop into leaders and what does ELAM contribute to this development. This more in-depth review will not only follow the fellows, but will evaluate the thorough interview with schools' Deans, the impact on not only the fellows' career progression, but the effects on the schools.
