Conference on building safe, healthy, and livable communities

The ways in which our communities are currently being designed (e.g., roads with no sidewalks) have made it difficult for people to engage in regular moderate physical activity. While healthier land use planning and development are beginning to be implemented in isolated instances, these practices are far from business-as-usual. To make healthier land use planning the standard rather than the exception, local governments must change their planning practices. To address this problem, local government leaders must be inspired to change city and county land use practices. The local leaders who spearhead this movement in their communities need support from their constituents and professional supporters. This grant will support the Local Government's Commission (LGC) New Partners for Smart Growth: Building Safe, Healthy and Livable Communities conference, in January 2002. The program for this conference will further advance the discussion on smart growth issues, while continuing the theme of implementing a multidisciplinary approach to building safe, healthy and livable communities. This grant will provide the LGC support to ensure that health and older adults issues are interwoven into the conference agenda and support the training of select youth leaders in the area of design of healthy, livable communities. This project will be considered successful if it results in advancing non-traditional partnerships and new projects with the health community as measured by the post-conference survey.
