Evaluation of the CASAWORKS for Families initiative to provide substance abuse treatment in welfare reform programs

Unlike many programs and projects that study the effects of welfare reform programs on children, CASAWORKS for Families focuses on improving the health and employability of women with a history of substance abuse. As such, evaluation of the client outcomes is essential. The purpose of this project is to continue the outcomes evaluation through the planning period for Phase II of CASAWORKS for Families. Activities during this period will include further analysis of Phase I outcome data and use of these analyses to refine a single, cohesive, and well specified model to test in Phase II. In addition, the grantee will work with the staff of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA) to complete the design of the Phase II prospective, randomized, controlled trial, to complete necessary pilot studies and quality assurance methods to support that design. Success for this project would be the development, in partnership with CASA staff, of a rigorous research and implementation plan to demonstrate the outcomes of CASAWORKS for Families.
