This grant provides partial support for a longitudinal study of substance abusing youthful offenders. The Northwestern Juvenile Project is the only large-scale study of youth in juvenile detention. The 1998 baseline data provided a close look at the rates of mental health and substance abuse disorders in these youth. Continuation of the study (possibly because of unprecedented retention rates--87 percent) will provide an opportunity to track the long-term outcomes of these youth. Additional data will be added about pathways to substance abuse treatment, services provided over time, and related outcomes.
