Community-based tobacco prevention program for African-American youth

The Foundation's Innovators Combating Substance Abuse program was designed to highlight substance abuse as the nation's number one health problem by recognizing those who are striving to bring creative solutions to the field of substance abuse.The purpose of this project is to enhance activities of a community-based, tobacco use prevention program targeted to African American youth--African American Youth Initiative. The objective of this program is to: (1) increase the exposure of African American youth to more formal training opportunities; (2) increase the role of youth leaders in training activities; and (3) strengthen the proficiency of youth in policy advocacy and media-based skills. Specifically, the project will produce an expanded training curriculum through a more comprehensive treatment of topics and issues related to tobacco control and provide activities that will support a year-round tobacco control program for youth of different ages. Through the development of a Web site, the project hopes to facilitate the rapid dissemination of the revised program and the creation of an on-line community which is actively implementing the program.
