The Foundation's SmokeLess States: National Tobacco Policy Initiative is a program that supports development and implementation of comprehensive statewide strategies to reduce tobacco use through education, treatment, and policy initiatives.The purpose of this project is to develop community support for an increase in Georgia's state tax on tobacco. Strategic use of media advocacy initiatives will garner public and legislative support (with matching funds) for such a tax increase. An increase in the spit tobacco tax will be targeted first followed by a campaign to increase the currently low cigarette tax of 12 cents per pack. The goal is to increase Georgia's tobacco tax to the currant national average of 42 cents per pack.
