The Foundation's SmokeLess States: National Tobacco Policy Initiative is a program that supports development and implementation of comprehensive statewide strategies to reduce tobacco use through education, treatment, and policy initiatives. This grant supports the Montana SmokeLess States Initiative to concentrate efforts on three primary policy objectives: (1) increase the amount of the cigarette excise tax from $.18 to $.55 and the excise tax on other tobacco products from 12.5 to 25 percent; (2) secure additional funding from MSA for tobacco control in Montana, up from $3.5 million to $9.3 million per year; and (3) enact strong clean indoor air policies at the municipal level, increasing the percentage of Montanans protected from secondhand smoke from 13 to 39 percent. The Montana SmokeLess States Initiative will work toward these objectives by: (1) strategically expanding and diversifying the coalition; (2) enhancing the policy advocacy capacity of tobacco control advocates through training and technical assistance; (3) expanding and improving media advocacy efforts; and (4) combating the influence of the tobacco industry in Montana.
