This year, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) will celebrate its 125th Anniversary. For the last 10 years, the AAMC's journal, "Academic Medicine," has published each month a feature entitled, "Medicine and the Arts." This feature presents poems, excerpts from fiction and nonfiction books, plays, art, photographs, and film, with commentary that explores the relevance of the presented material to medicine and the lives of physicians. It was designed to provide resource material that could be incorporated into, or supplement, course work in the medical school curriculum. As part of the anniversary celebration, the AAMC will publish a hard cover, 250-page book highlighting 100 of the best features and will also include two specially commissioned essays and an overview to complement the collection. The book will be "unveiled" at the 2001 AAMC Annual Meeting and will be distributed free of charge to the leadership of the academic medicine community. This grant provides support toward the publication of the book. The project will be considered successful if it can emphasize the importance of the humanities in the education of doctors.
