The purpose of this project is to establish a forum for new cross-sector meetings and collaborations to address the social and environmental barriers to increasing activity levels for all Americans. The goal is to build partnerships of various disciplines and relevant government agencies (concerned with architecture, urban planning, transportation, public health, and other issues) to explore ways to encourage and facilitate physical activity. This grant provides support for two planning meetings and a national conference of thought leaders, practitioners, policy experts, and advocate agencies. This effort is expected to provide insight into, and direction for, the development of environmental research, policy, and advocacy infrastructure to promote physical activity as a mainstream matter; inform the Foundation's community and special population programs to increase physical activity; and attract private and public funding partners. This project will be considered successful if it establishes new cross-disciplinary partnerships and paradigms for work to reduce the nation's trends toward increasingly sedentary lifestyles.
