Facility expansion project for the Cancer Institute of New Jersey
In response to the high incidence of cancer and cancer mortality in New Jersey, in 1990 the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School began development of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) to provide the State's residents with access to state-of-the-art care for neoplastic disease. Prior to the emergence of CINJ, most residents requiring expert cancer care had to seek treatment out-of-state. The CINJ opened a new facility in 1996. At that time, an annual case load of 16,000 visits was anticipated. The number is now approaching 40,000 visits per year. CINJ has moved all employees not essential to patient care offsite, and has expanded its hours of operation. Notwithstanding, it cannot meet its climbing case load without additional space. The purpose of this grant is to help fund a major expansion of the CINJ facility.
