The Assessing the New Federalism project tracks the health and social welfare of families and children and relates family outcomes to policy changes at the state and federal levels. The centerpiece of the project is a national survey that is unique in its focus on low-income families, its ability to look at state-level impact, and the breadth of its domains across health and welfare issues. Analyses from this project have provided insights for policy makers at both the federal and state levels on issues of outreach and enrollment, characteristics of the uninsured, and barriers to expanding coverage. This grant supports the continued mining of the current project survey and the dissemination of timely, relevant information that can assist policy makers in evaluating and designing new programs.
