The tobacco industry documents that were released during several recent trials contain a wealth of information on marketing tactics, product development, and political influence on policy development. Although some of these documents are currently available on tobacco companies' Web sites, there is no guarantee for how long they will remain available to researchers. In addition, the Web sites are frequently unavailable, and when they come back online, it is believed that changes have been made to what is posted and how items can be located. This system is not conducive to researching specific topics and finding all that exists. Those in the tobacco control community who have been using these documents for research convened several meetings to discuss the problems with the current system and ways to solve the problem. The purpose of this project is to compile all the electronic versions of the documents in a secure electronic format that can be searched easily for many years to come.
