Collaborating to revise and evaluate DARE
This grant provides support for the second phase of planning for a four-phased project to redesign and evaluate the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) curricula or programs delivered in middle and high schools through the DARE network. (DARE is the nation's most implemented school-based drug prevention program, reaching an estimated 25 million children in 75 percent of the school districts across the country.) In November 1999, the Foundation approved a planning grant to bring together prevention researchers, curriculum experts and DARE officials to begin working on this project (Phase 1). The second planning phase supported by this grant will lay the groundwork for the full evaluation (Phases 3 and 4), for which a proposal will be submitted to the Foundation. The specific aims for Phase 2 are to field-test the middle school curriculum in a local (Akron) public school; to develop and pretest data collection instruments; to recruit schools to participate in the experimental or control condition; and to recruit and train 10 Site Coordinators who will be the principal project staff interacting with the schools, coordinating data collection and overseeing the tracking of students.
