Alabama Southern Rural Access Program

The Foundation's Southern Rural Access Program was designed to increase access to health care services in eight rural underserved states.Alabama's Rural Access Program will be led through a collaborative partnership between the West Alabama Health Services and the Alabama Family Practice Rural Health Board. Alabama will continue to develop a primary care "pipeline" continuum. One major activity will examine how to modify Alabama's existing Rural Medical Scholars Program and the Rural Alabama Health Professional Training Consortium Program to include a concentrated effort to increase minority participation. Alabama's recruitment and retention efforts will focus on a plan for developing a centralized system of health professional recruitment and retention. A rural health network plan will be designed that will facilitate network delivery of a full range of comprehensive primary care services. For the revolving loan component, Alabama will determine the scope of need and put together strategies for a revolving loan fund that will provide working capital, renovations, and other funding for rural health primary care providers in Alabama. Finally, the state will explore utilizing a community development approach for mobilizing the community and its resources for improvements that impact on health.
