Medical decision making for contemporary practice: A national faculty development program

Medical school training does not adequately prepare students to practice in the most effective and efficient manner within the context of a managed care environment. Current practicing physicians feel discouraged and disillusioned by rising expectations, constrained resources, and ever-increasing accountability and pass these attitudes on to students. Helpful strategies are available for effective practice, yet not highly utilized. These include: (1) greater emphasis on evidence-based medicine; (2) development and implementation of clinical guidelines; and (3) explicit efforts toward quality improvement. The purpose of this project is to develop and evaluate a nationally standardized curriculum on evidence-based medical decision making. In addition, a core of dedicated faculty will master the new curriculum and pass it on to peers and trainees through their well tested Stanford Faculty Development Program (SFDP) train the trainer program.
