Cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco (SLT) put users at a greater risk for tobacco-related diseases. Dental health care workers represent an untapped resource for providing brief counseling to tobacco-using patients. The purpose of this project is to implement and test a modified version of the Oregon Research Institute's effective, dental office-based SLT cessation program (a program originally administered to dental patients in HMO and private practice dental settings) among members of public health dental clinics serving low-income dental patients enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan. An evaluation will assess program implementation and determine how the intervention functioned in a public health environment.
