Planning for health care executives in the 21st century

Currently, health care administration education and executive development do not meet the leadership needs of the changing health care system. This grant supports a field-wide planning process to determine how to improve and expand health service management education and executive development--ultimately changing the way in which health care managers and leaders are prepared and evaluated. The major activities of this planning period include coalition and consensus building within the academic and practice communities around how to connect curricula development in the academic community with the need for values-driven leadership and new competencies in health care administration. The primary work of this project is a report detailing the knowledge, skills, and values lacking in health administration education and executive development; the curricula components that would address these gaps; and potential performance measures to evaluate health care management education and practice in the future. The Association for University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), the Accrediting Commission of Education for Health Services Administration and the Health Research Development Institute, an alliance of CEOs from leading health systems and supply companies, are joining together to provide leadership to this effort. The AUPHA will be the responsible institution for this project.
