Newark violence prevention project

The Newark Violence Prevention Project is a collaboration of governmental agencies, community organizations, social services providers, private citizens, business leaders and the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University. The goals of the project are to: (1) reduce violence and victimization among teens and young adults; and (2) establish a permanent process to manage other community problems better. Phase I of the project concentrated on building the foundation for working partnerships. Phase II focused efforts on building cooperative structures between and within criminal justice, service, faith, and community groups, and identifying specific problem areas from which to build the collaborative prevention strategy. This grant supports Phase III of the project which will be the implementation phase. Tasks that will be undertaken during Phase III include: (1) introduction of reduction and prevention tactics beginning in the summer of 2000; (2) monitoring data collection and feedback to the Working Groups and Advisory Council to adjust or expand tactics as needed; and (3) development of ongoing communication to maintain collaboration and problem solving efforts by ensuring new procedures are absorbed into collaborating agencies.
