The Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows Program was designed to prepare a select cadre of outstanding nurse executives for leadership roles in clinical service, education, and public health. This grant supports a second series of three classes of the Executive Nurse Fellows Program. The three-year fellowships are specifically designed for nurses with proven executive talent aspiring to exert leadership in building the nation's capacities in health and health care. Fellows continue in their career employment during their fellowship experience, which includes: (1) a sequence of seminars, tutorials, coaching, and self-study experiences on issues of leadership and change; (2) a strategic planning project developed with (and co-funded by) the Fellow's institution; and (3) a sustained mentorship experience under a top executive leader outside nursing. Although sharing in these components, each Fellow pursues an individual learning plan developed at the outset with the help of a comprehensive battery of testing exercises and instruments. The learning plans are monitored according to the Fellow's progress in achieving five basic leadership competencies: self understanding, strategic thinking, assuming risk, effective communication, and motivating change.
