Nursing faculty development in end-of-life care

The purpose of this project is to train 500 nursing school faculty and other key nursing leaders in end-of-life care. Faculty development training conferences will be conducted for undergraduate, associate, and graduate nursing school faculty. Faculty from continuing education programs, state boards of nursing, and licensed vocational nurse education programs will also be trained. Course content will be consistent with the AACN's core competencies and include nursing care in end-of-life care, ethical/legal issues, communication, preparation and care for the time of death, and achieving quality of life at the end of life. A competitive process will be used for selecting faculty participants, and applicants will be required to: (1) demonstrate an institutional commitment to increase end-of-life content in their nursing school's curriculum; (2) collect baseline data on current end-of-life content; (3) demonstrate a plan of action for increasing their school's curriculum where needed; and (4) collect follow-up data on changes made in school curriculum.
