Providing physical activity programs to adults with chronic mental illness

Gateway Homes of Greater Richmond, Inc., was established in 1983 to provide housing and many other supportive services for the chronically mentally ill. The organization began by leasing apartments and houses in urban downtown Richmond. In 1989, Gateway Farm opened on a 30-acre campus in rural Chesterfield County (purchased with donated funds), providing private rooms and supportive services for its residents 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. In February 1999, Gateway's first assisted-living apartment building, Moore House, opened to serve residents who need less supervision than that provided at the Farm. Gateway has also built a multipurpose building called Gateway Center to serve as the site for its new programs. Gateway Center is a 4,200 square foot building with furnished space for physical training, arts and crafts, prevocational training, and music therapy. In each of its programs, Gateway provides a safe, structured, family-oriented environment. The purpose of this project is to provide new physical activity programs for the chronically mentally ill. Foundation funding will be applied to the construction of and equipment for a five-mile, eight-foot wide hiking and biking trail to be built on Gateway's 30-acre campus in southern Chesterfield County. The cost of the construction of the "crushed dust" path alone is approximately $30,000. The remaining funds will be spent on bicycles, shoes, helmets, and for the implementation of a walking/hiking program. Costs of an instructor will also be supported. The Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation has been contacted by Gateway to discuss a possible partnership opportunity. When Gateway builds its hiking/biking path and allows members of the Parks and Recreation's biking club to use the trail on a scheduled basis, Chesterfield County will help to underwrite the cost of the upkeep of the trail.
