Increasing the public's awareness of advances in genetics and the impact of these advances on their health and health care will require collaboration and cooperation among many public and private groups to succeed. In August 1998, representatives of a variety of NIH Institutes, non-profit professional groups, and state and local health departments met in Bethesda, Maryland, to form the Genetics Awareness Coalition. The purpose of this project is to provide partial funding for two additional meetings of this group to solidify further the establishment of the Coalition and to assist the Coalition to begin to implement activities aimed to translate recent advances in genetics into personal action and public health practice.
