Summer Medical Education Program

The Foundation's Summer Medical and Dental Education Program was designed to develop and implement a six-week academic enrichment program for undergraduate college students from minority groups, from rural areas, and from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine or dentistry. This grant provides five additional years of support for the Minority Medical Education Program at Case Western Reserve University. The purpose of this project is to increase minority student acceptance rates into medical schools. The minority students eligible to participate in this program are from those population groups that are underrepresented in American medicine: blacks, Mexican-Americans, Native Americans, and mainland Puerto Ricans. The grantee will enroll 125 students per year in a special summer education program which will include academic enrichment, a structured laboratory experience, MCAT preparation, and counseling.
