Program to facilitate treatment of low-income people with cancer

The Foundation's Local Initiative Funding Partners Program is a matching grants program designed to establish partnerships between the Foundation and local grantmakers in support of innovative, community-based projects that improve health and health care for underserved and vulnerable populations. This project is a collaboration among the Truman Medical Center, the American Cancer Society, the Samuel U. Rodgers Community Health Center, and eight community health care agencies. Using trained volunteers to help guide people through the maze of medical, financial, and social service options, Project Navigator hopes to speed up the process of cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment for low-income, inner-city populations of Kansas City. A main objective is to reduce the lag time between screening and treatment from the current 176 days to 30 or less. The funding partner is The John W. and Effie E. Speas Memorial Trust.
