The Foundation's Local Initiative Funding Partners Program is a matching grants program designed to establish partnerships between the Foundation and local grantmakers in support of innovative, community-based projects that improve health and health care for underserved and vulnerable populations.Called Families First, this project is a coherent, integrated response to child abuse and neglect cases involving parental drug abuse. The project will include assessment and referral to judicially supervised substance abuse treatment and intensive case management. Health, parenting, education, employment and other needs will also be addressed to strengthen the likelihood of success. This project will improve treatment for clients, provide the tools to monitor parents' progress in treatment, and reduce the length of time children are in foster care. A comprehensive manual and accompanying database will be developed for use in other jurisdictions across the country. Funding partners include the Suffolk County Court System and the Suffolk County Department of Social Services.
