Research and emerging evidence from RWJF's grant making to the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation, the New Jersey Nets, and Major League Baseball indicate that professional sports organizations can be important partners in initiatives aimed at benefiting the health and development of young people. The purpose of this project is to work closely with the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation on an exploratory project to engage professional and amateur sports organizations around the country (including the National Basketball Association, National Collegiate Athletic Association, and community foundations) as part of a comprehensive youth development strategy. Activities under this project include convening meetings between Foundation grantees working in the sports/youth development field (such as the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation and the National Spit Tobacco Education Program Major League Baseball Campaign) and leaders in professional and amateur sports, and other potential partners, including other philanthropies and corporations. A particular emphasis will be placed on partnering with community agencies that work with at-risk or underserved youth and their families. The Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation, under a separate renewal grant, provides technical assistance for this effort.
