Research on patient requests under managed care

The Foundation's program, Strengthening the Patient-Provider Relationship in a Changing Health Care Environment, was designed to support research and convening activities that examine the patient-provider relationship under the growing influence of managed care.Under this program, this study will examine the nature of patient requests and physician responses in two managed care organizations. The project will: (1) develop a descriptive epidemiology of patients requests; (2) explore the prevalence, meaning, and context of requests for which medical indications are deemed weak; (3) study the relationship between fulfillment of requests and ambulatory care outcomes; and (4) develop hypotheses about the influence of features of specific managed care organization and physician-patient relationships.
