Addicted to nicotine: a national research forum

This program contract provides partial support for a national conference focusing national attention on the latest research findings about the behavioral, cognitive, neurobiological sources of nicotine addiction, prevention of tobacco product use, and state-of-the-art treatment strategies. The conference, co-sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, will provide a timely opportunity for an active interchange among scientists, prevention and treatment practitioners, and public health professionals and policy makers to address the costly and widespread problem of nicotine addiction in the U.S. Specifically, this conference will enhance awareness and increase knowledge of nicotine addiction and its critical role in initiating and maintaining tobacco use including: (1) role of genetic, biological, behavioral, and sociocultural risk and protective factors; (2) role of economic factors, advertising and ease of access in initiating tobacco use; (3) breakthroughs in the neurobiology of nicotine addiction; and (4) role of behavioral and pharmacological treatment approaches.
