Study of the perspectives of U.S. leaders on tobacco policy

The purpose of this project is to address an aspect of the social environment of tobacco control that has never been systematically studied. The project will clarify the extent to which reducing morbidity and mortality due to tobacco use is and can be an explicit public policy goal of various social and philosophical movements. The American Council on Science & Health will: (1) conduct a literature review on the views of American leaders of various ideological camps on tobacco control and analogous issues, as well as core social and philosophical beliefs; (2) interview leaders associated with various ideological camps about their views; (3) prepare and publish a white paper that presents the results of the literature review and interviews along with an analysis of the extent to which different leaders are consistent in how they apply their social and philosophical beliefs to tobacco control and other issues; and (4) publish and disseminate their findings.
