This grant is for a demonstration project to: (1) identify high-utilizing, somatizing patients in primary care practice; (2) treat them with a time-limited behavioral medicine intervention called the Personal Health Improvement Program (PHIP); and (3) evaluate its impact on symptom status, satisfaction, and subsequent utilization. Patients receiving PHIP treatment will be compared with a similar group of patients who are screened and followed longitudinally but not offered the behavioral intervention. The goal is to show that an approach that combines case-finding with behavioral intervention designed specifically to manage somatization can improve health status and reduce inappropriate utilization.
