Children with disabilities: History and health policy since 1946
The Foundation's Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program was designed to strengthen the presence of generalist physician faculty in the nation's medical schools through career development awards to outstanding junior faculty in medical school departments/divisions of family medicine, general internal medicine and general pediatrics.Under this program, Jeffrey P. Brosco, M.D., Ph.D., will attempt to improve disability policy by examining the social, medical, and legislative history of children with developmental disabilities. He will apply the methods of empirical historical research: review the previous relevant scholarship; locate and abstract data from libraries, national archives, and personal collections; and use the numerous documents reviewed to write a synthetic narrative that reaches a new understanding of past events. The specific aims of this project are: (1) to describe the social, medical, and legislative history of children with disabilities; (2) to understand how the changing definitions of "disability" affect federal and state policy; and (3) to explore the role of physicians, families, and consumer advocacy groups in legislative changes.
