In January 1997, the Foundation awarded a one-year grant to support the development of the Worksite Wellness Program, a demonstration project designed to deliver worksite health education services to medically underserved, underinsured and uninsured workers in central Los Angeles. Currently, 35 health care providers have committed to providing services at the worksite (including health fairs, screening programs, and lectures), and 8 businesses have initiated health promotion programs. This grant supports the expansion of project activities during its second year of operation. The project team will: continue efforts to recruit businesses and healthcare providers into the program; refine referral and follow-up mechanisms and document access barriers; refine a program model and evaluation framework for replication in other California communities; and develop a plan (including income-generating strategies) for the continuation of the Worksite Wellness project model.
