Urban Health Initiative: Working to Ensure the Health and Safety of Children

The Foundation's program, Urban Health Initiative: Working to Ensure the Health and Safety of Children, was designed to work closely with five cities for a period of up to ten years in an effort to improve the health and safety of their young people.The Oakland Child Health and Safety Initiative plans its efforts primarily around two key concepts. "Village Centers" will be created around each of the city's middle schools to create a positive and safe place where youth (and their parents) could participate in positive structured activities in the hours after school, using recreation, homework assistance, tutoring, conflict-resolution, computer, arts, and music classes. A second effort will develop more concentrated strategies to reduce youth crime and violence. The project plans to support innovative ideas to reduce truancy, mobilize neighborhood watch groups, and engage businesses and local residents to develop safe passages between schools and homes. Additional plans are to establish block parent programs, special safe havens for youth in high-crime areas, and engage more active adult participation and supervision of youth on the street.
