The Foundation's Southern Rural Access Program was designed to increase access to health care services in eight rural underserved states. This grant provides technical assistance and direction for this program. In July 1997, the Foundation authorized this program to: (1) increase the supply of primary care providers in underserved areas; (2) strengthen the health care infrastructure; and (3) build capacity at the state and community level to tackle health care problems. The program design allows for a more targeted and holistic approach to addressing access needs in eight states including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia. Funds will be used for convening, expert consulting, analysis, and broad educational efforts. It will also cover administrative and staffing costs of the National Program Office.
