This grant supports a project to increase the number of youth and parent tobacco control advocates in Connecticut and Maryland through a partnership of the National Education Association and the National Parent Teachers Association. These two national organizations will work collaboratively with agencies such as the National Center for Tobacco-Free Kids, the SmokeLess States coalitions in these two states, and the National Middle School Association. This pilot project will have three major components: (1) the development and testing of a Teacher Advocacy Guide and a Parents' Advocacy Guide; (2) an outreach effort with local schools and parent teacher organizations to recruit parents, youth, and teacher volunteers; and (3) an effort to link these parent and youth volunteers to local- and state-level tobacco control coalitions. This project also will help to strengthen the national staffing infrastructure and organizational commitment on tobacco prevention issues of these two important national organizations.
