The purpose of this pilot research project is to identify and assess the causative factors related to favorable pregnancy outcomes of immigrant mothers in the U.S. This pilot will target women of primarily Mexican origin living on Chicago's South side and will determine the feasibility of, and sharpen the research design for, a future comparative national project. Recently, health specialists have cited difficulty in explaining the current "paradox" of better Hispanic health in spite of their lower than average socio-economic positions and exposures to high risk. The explanations for this paradox cannot be fully rationalized without more data than is currently available.
