Follow-up study on adolescent girls' tobacco use

The purpose of this project is to examine the transition from smoking experimentation to dependence and related changes in behavior and attitudes toward smoking during high school and the years just after for adolescent females. The study will follow-up 5 years later with 160 girls who were originally followed for 3 years starting in 8th and 9th grade for a study of smoking, nutrition, and body image. This is an especially useful study because the co-investigators are medical anthropologists who emphasize delving into the personal and cultural meanings of smoking and body image for adolescent females in addition to examining links to behavior and attitudes. Findings from the study will be published in scholarly journals and hopefully covered by the press, as the findings were from the original study, and also help lay the groundwork for the Foundation's research network on the etiology of tobacco dependence.
