Community-based asthma screening and education program

The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas.Under this planning grant, the Passaic Asthma Reduction Effort (PARE Asthma) will assess the incidence of asthma in the City of Passaic and develop materials that are culturally sensitive and age appropriate for children and their families. They expect to implement an asthma education and support program for 800 medically underserved asthmatics through public schools, Passaic Head Start, Passaic Housing Authority, and local religious institutions. Their goal is to decrease the rate of asthma-related hospital admissions to within 10 percent of the New Jersey average over the next three years.
