Preparation of a case study on the FDA's decision to regulate tobacco

This grant provides support for the research necessary for a monograph (with the possibility for inclusion in a book) by former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner David A. Kessler, M.D., for a history and analysis of the events and the findings leading up to the FDA's decision to regulate tobacco products. Dr. Kessler, who recently announced his decision to step down as FDA Commissioner, will chronicle the history surrounding one of the most dramatic decisions in the annals of public health. His analysis of lessons learned leading up to the FDA's decision will provide a valuable reference for the benefit of policy makers, the scientific community and the general public.
