Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program - Collin B. Smikle, M.D.

The Foundation's Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program was designed to provide four-year postdoctoral research awards offered to historically disadvantaged physicians who are committed to developing careers in academic medicine, to improving the health of underserved populations, and to furthering the understanding and elimination of health disparities.The purpose of this project is to increase the number of minority medical faculty with a high likelihood of achieving senior academic positions in the nation's medical schools. Four-year fellowships are awarded to candidates on a competitive basis for research under the supervision of a senior faculty member at an academic center noted for the training of young faculty. Each grant will be reviewed every two years to determine if the Fellow is making satisfactory progress. Under this grant, Collin B. Smikle, M.D., will conduct research entitled, "The Role of Stem Cell Factor and its Receptor, c-kit, in Oocyte Matruation and Follicular Development." This grant is consistent with the Foundation's continuing efforts to improve the number and quality of minority physicians. Preparation of minority faculty to assume leadership roles in academic medicine should contribute to a continuing commitment in the nation's medical schools to increase the number of minority physicians in the United States.
