Technical assistance and direction for RWJF's Urban Health Initiative

The Foundation's program, Urban Health Initiative: Working to Ensure the Health and Safety of Children, was designed to work closely with five cities for a period of up to ten years in an effort to improve the health and safety of their young people.This grant supports the traditional activities of the National Program Office (NPO) to manage and direct the America's Promise Initiative, and, in addition, supports the development of specific new areas of technical assistance that address key issues identified by the sites, the Foundation, and the NPO. The program was authorized in January 1995 to fund an urban health strategy focused on improving the health and safety of children. The purpose of this Initiative is to work intensively with a small number of cities to find out whether, by bringing key urban and suburban leaders and organizations together in a concerted collaborative effort, it is possible over time to make significant improvements in the health and safety of children living in these cities' most distressed neighborhoods. During this year, the NPO will work with the Foundation to select up to five final sites for implementation. In addition to providing the usual technical assistance and direction to the program's sites, the NPO's activities will be expanded to include: a fellows program, a leadership training program, communications technical assistance, and seminars and white papers.
