Development of unified family courts to assist families with substance abuse problems

The purpose of this project is to foster and develop reforms in the judicial system that respond more appropriately and effectively to the issues of substance abuse. The project will support development of unified family courts in five sites around the country. A unified family court system combines family and juvenile courts into one entity and provides a comprehensive approach to helping families in crisis. Unified family courts allow the judicial system to intervene earlier in a child's initial exposure to substance abuse, and treat and educate a defendant's entire family, instead of simply the defendant. In addition to working with the five sites, the American Bar Association (ABA) will undertake an outreach effort to include other states and counties about the advantages of the unified family court system. Foundation funds will be used for ABA staff and consultants who will provide technical assistance to the five sites, recruit and train key stakeholders, and develop local strategies to evaluate the efforts.
