Study of retirees who have lost employer-sponsored health benefits

The study will investigate the experience of a group of retirees whose health benefits were canceled by their former employer to determine: (1) their ability to obtain replacement coverage, including issues of the type of coverage, its cost, and whether coverage is available through a spouse's current or past employment; (2) the necessity for retirees to return to work in order to obtain coverage; (3) the increased burden on the public sector; and (4) the impact on access to needed health care services. In January 1995, retirees of John Morrell & Company (a meat-packing firm) were informed that the company was canceling their health insurance benefits. Analysis of the interview and survey results will provide a description of the retirees' health insurance coverage status and perceived access to needed health care services approximately two years after they received word that their employer-sponsored benefits were being canceled. Descriptive statistics will be calculated to show how many retirees had obtained replacement coverage by type, source, and cost: how many had shifted from use of employer-sponsored benefits to public sector programs, particularly VA benefits and Medicaid; and how many retirees had foregone needed services.
