The Foundation's Local Initiative Funding Partners Program is a matching grants program designed to establish partnerships between the Foundation and local grantmakers in support of innovative, community-based projects that improve health and health care for underserved and vulnerable populations.Under this grant project, 12 paraprofessionals known as doulas will be trained to provide prenatal, delivery and post-partum support for teenage mothers in low-income areas. The doula childbirth support model has been shown to have fewer labor and delivery complications, fewer medical interventions, and increased well being for mothers and babies. It is expected that by the grant's end the project will serve 100 new mothers per year.
