Assessing insurance coverage of preventive services by private employers

The purpose of this project is to examine the role of private business in providing insurance coverage for clinical preventive services. Specifically, over the 15-month grant period, the Partnership for Prevention will: (1) Conduct telephone interviews with health benefits managers at approximately 1500 companies to collect information about their coverage of preventive services. (2) Conduct in-depth interviews with a sample of health benefits managers to better understand the factors that affect their benefits decisions, and the kind of information they would like to have to enable them to make informed decisions about coverage for preventive services. (3) Hold a symposium for corporate officials, benefits managers, health plan representatives, and governmental health officials to present survey findings; elevate the visibility of prevention issues in the business community; and identify strategies (both within the business community and among government and nonprofit organizations) to encourage wider coverage of preventive services. It is hoped that this project will raise awareness in the business community about the benefits of covering preventive services and encourage business to provide such coverage.
