Establishment of a managed care industry research center

This grant provides partial support for a managed care industry center to be established at Harvard University. The primary sponsor of the new center will be the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation which has a long-standing interest in supporting centers focusing on particular industries. The aim of the center will be to engage leaders of the managed care industry in developing and then conducting a research agenda to address questions of common interest to firms involved in the managed care industry. The hope is that this research agenda will help improve the productivity, quality, and use of manpower resources across the entire industry. The activities of the center will focus both on managed health care and on managed behavioral health care. Although organizational and analytical issues are often similar across managed care companies focusing on each type of care, there do seem to be two distinct industries emerging, one focusing on general health care and one on behavioral health issues--especially mental health and substance abuse services.
