Project to track changes in response to the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program

The Foundation's Substance Abuse Policy Research Program was designed to provide support for investigators to conduct policy research on a variety of subjects directed at helping the country reduce the harm caused by substance abuse.This project is a follow-up survey of a cohort of respondents to the 1993 Massachusetts Tobacco Survey, the baseline assessment for the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program. The research design involves reinterviewing all smokers and a sample of nonsmokers who responded to the baseline survey. The analyses will focus on reactions to the media campaign, progress toward smoking cessation and changes in support for tobacco control policy. Results will serve program designers in Massachusetts and other states which take on tobacco control efforts by helping them match program resources to specific subgroups of the population who are likely to be favorably affected by the programs. It will also help identify groups that have not responded to current efforts and suggest new directions of intervention activities.
