Program to improve social and medical services for Hispanic women

Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located.This grant provides partial support for the further development and expansion in 1996 of a new program of the Planned Parenthood Association of the Mercer Area (PPAMA) addressed to the special needs of Hispanic women concerning reproductive health. Launched two years ago, the program was prompted by the swift growth of Hispanic families in Mercer County, particularly Trenton, and by the profound cultural barriers affecting their reproductive health care--religious beliefs and social rules, as well as language. Despite these impediments to care, through sensitive and energetic outreach, the new PPAMA program has experienced rapid and continuing growth, serving some 2,400 patients in its second year.
