Partnerships for Training: Regional Education Systems for Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse-Midwives, and Physician Assistants

The Foundation's program, Partnerships for Training: Regional Education Systems for Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse-Midwives, and Physician Assistants, was designed to address shortages of primary care practitioners in medically underserved areas through development of innovative regional education models for nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, and physicians assistants that emphasize training these new professionals within their own communities.The Mountain and Plains Partnership (MAPP) region currently encompasses Colorado and Wyoming and project leaders plan to explore later inclusion of neighboring states. The MAPP project intends to establish a collaborative web among mid-level clinician educators, employers, payers, students and prospective patients; and pursue all technically feasible means of developing a sensible approach to education and employment of mid-level clinicians in rural and underserved areas. During the planning phase the partners intend to: (1) conduct a joint review of current education and training programs to identify cross-training and streamlining options; (2) develop directories of potential mid-level preceptors, clinical sites, and distance learning activities in rural and underserved areas; (3) develop distance learning technology guidelines to establish cross-program compatibility; (4) convene 20 regional and local meetings to develop partnership opportunities for recruiting and training local students, financing their education, and employing and retaining them; and (5) develop regionally appropriate provider-patient ratios and supply-demand models for mid-level clinicians.
